Starting her career with a small role as a child artist in Akshay Kumar starrer Sangarsh (1999).Alia got the big deal when she was signed as the leading lady for Student Of The Year (SOTY, 2012), a Karan Johar Production, alongside Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra.

SOTY, where Alia enacted a role of young, bubbly, girl turned out to be a big hit but came no critical acclaim for any of the actors.

  • First Offbeat film: Highway

Next, she signed Imtiaz Ali’s offbeat film Highway, where she portrayed the role of a teenage girl who develops Stockholm syndrome. A non-commercial film, Highway was very well received by the audience and critics. Alia got a lot applause for taking on a challenging role at such young age.

  • Establishing herself: the rom-com bubbly actress

Next came, 2 States, a book adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel by the same name and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, a love-drama by Karan Johar. Both of these movies went on to become huge hits and made Alia, a fair newcomer by then a household name.

The year 2015 saw Alia’s first failure, as Shandaar, a film with Shahid Kapoor failed to bring the audience to the theatre.

Then came, Kapoor & Sons (2016) alongside Siddharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, and veterans like Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor, became a sleeper hit and grabbed good reviews from the critics.

  • OMG: Award-winning performance

Udta Punjab, a film trapped in controversies, gave Alia the platform again after Highway to showcase her acting abilities and how she is not afraid of accepting challenging and unconventional roles.

Gauri Shinde’s ‘Dear Zindagi’ made 2016 a hit for Alia, as the film received critical acclaim and love from the audience and proved to be a hit at box office. While reviewing Dear Zindagi on News18, Shomin Sen writes: ‘It is in fact, Alia Bhatt’s film and not SRK’s. The young actress is in top form and shines throughout. Not faltering even for a second, making the flawed Kaira very endearing.’

      Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017) also went to become a hit and kept Alia in the limelight.
